How Dell EMC Landed In the “Magic Quadrant”

40 zettabytes.

That's the predicted size of the digital universe by 2020. Data is the big bang that brought this universe into existence. Big data. Structured data. Unstructured data.

Businesses now must tackle managing and storing all this information, no matter what form it takes. Distributed file systems (DFS) and object storage are the software and hardware that will help businesses manage this burgeoning new world. Gartner recently published their first "Magic Quadrant" for DFS and object storage. They note that by 2021, more than 80% of enterprise data will be stored in scale-out storage systems in enterprise and cloud data centers. Compare that to 30% today. Dell EMC rose to the top of the "Magic Quadrant," far surpassing other participants in the field including IBM and Scality.

Obviously, Dell EMC has staked out a strong position in this arena. How did they get here and why does it matter?

Gartner notes their strong position comes from the popular Isilon and Elastic Cloud Storage products. Isilon All-Flash delivers the extreme performance ability of flash tech plus the efficiency, flexibility, and resiliency of the network-attached storage (NAS) platform. Its performance scales to 25M IOPS and 1.5 TB/s bandwidth in a single cluster. Isilon is built to handle the most demanding unstructured data workloads.

Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage delivers unmatched storage efficiency, resiliency, and simplicity. It comes as a turnkey appliance, as ECS Software that can deploy on supported hardware, or as fully managed ECS-as-a-Service.

In their report, Gartner noted these strengths in the Dell EMC portfolio:

  • Isilon use ranges from traditional file system support to less traditional uses, like video surveillance, big data analytics, and backup and active archives.
  • Elastic Cloud Storage attracts users with price and performance, being used in large production deployments across a variety of enterprises including cloud service providers.
  • End users will be attracted to Dell EMC because of their broad portfolio, aggressive pricing, and consumption models (like software-only purchases, leasing, subscription and utility-based pricing).
